Cancún or Tulum Airport for Akumal? How to Choose

By Trevor Schaafsma, owner · 18 October 2026

Both Cancún and Tulum airports can work for a stay in Akumal. Choose by comparing the flight and the ground transfer together: the route available from your city, arrival time, baggage, transport cost and the people travelling with you.

Casa Arroyo Blanco is in Akumal, between Playa del Carmen and Tulum. Our current planning estimates are about one hour and 15 minutes from Cancún International Airport and one hour and 10 minutes from Tulum International Airport. Traffic and the journey on the day can change those times. A five-minute difference in an estimate is less useful than a flight that suits your group.

Compare the whole journey

An airfare is only part of getting to the villa. Before booking, put the two options beside each other.

What to compare What to look for
Flight A suitable route from your departure city, including any connection
Arrival The local landing time and how it fits the group's day
Baggage The allowance you need and any additional charge
Ground transport A quote for the right airport, vehicle and number of passengers
Return journey The pickup time needed for your flight home
Flexibility The airline and transport booking's actual change terms

A cheaper ticket with a connection may still be the right choice. So may a more expensive direct flight that avoids a long travel day. The useful comparison is the full trip you would be buying.

For two families or several couples travelling together, compare the total for the group as well as the price per person. Check that the proposed transfer vehicle has room for both passengers and luggage. Our guide to Akumal for a group of eight covers the accommodation side of that decision.

Check your dates with the airline

Search using the airport codes CUN for Cancún and TQO for Tulum (Felipe Carrillo Puerto). A result for the region is not enough; confirm the airport on the actual flight before arranging your transfer.

Routes and operating days can change between seasons. For winter travel from Canada or the United States, check your exact departure and return dates with the airline. A route announcement or last year's timetable cannot tell you what is available for your week.

If members of the group are arriving separately, decide whether everyone needs to use the same airport. Coordinated flights can simplify a shared transfer, but a separate arrival may be more convenient for somebody coming from another city. Work through that before one person books for everybody.

Arrange transport to the villa

Casa Arroyo Blanco is in the Grand Sirenis residential community in Akumal. Use the villa's confirmed arrival instructions when arranging the journey, particularly if a service asks whether you mean the resort or a private residence.

Airport transport can be arranged on request through Casa. Confirm the vehicle, price, pickup instructions and flight details for your stay. If travelling with children, specify any child-seat requirements when requesting a quote.

For a rental car, compare the complete booking terms, collection arrangements and luggage space. Think about how you plan to use the car during the week as well as the airport journey. Some groups want it for independent outings; others prefer to arrange transport for the days they go out.

At Cancún, airport operator ASUR lists ADO city transport, taxis and car rental. If you choose an airport bus, include the onward journey from its town stop to the villa in your plan and budget. A bus ticket to Playa del Carmen or Tulum is not a door-to-door transfer to Casa. Compare the actual route and arrival time before deciding whether that extra connection suits your group.

For a longer stay, our winter guide covers everyday travel. If a rental car is mainly for excursions, start with the day trips you want to take from Akumal.

Give arrival day some room

Landing time is not the time you leave the airport. Leave room for immigration, customs, collecting your bags and meeting the driver or picking up a car.

Send flight details to the person arranging your pickup, and keep the contact information and villa arrival instructions accessible. Before travelling, settle how you will handle groceries or dinner so the first evening does not become another planning meeting.

For the return trip, agree the pickup time with your transport provider and follow your airline's check-in guidance. The drive estimate alone does not determine when to leave the villa.

A house with a story behind it

Once you are here, Casa gives your group its own space: four king bedrooms, a private pool and a base between Playa del Carmen and Tulum.

Before your stay, you can see how the house took shape on Casa's YouTube channel. Some of the experience behind it also runs through From Vacation to Owner, available as a book and an audiobook from Vacation to Owner.

If you are comparing flights for a stay, ask us about your arrival plans. Start with the route that works for your people, then arrange the journey from the airport around it.
